Alana Levandoski

Saturday 3rd February 2007

When Alana played here last May she played a very enjoyable selection of songs, featuring many from her debut CD. This time round her set included many as yet unrecorded songs. This could have been problematic from two angles. Firstly, an audience inevitably wants to hear their favourites and secondly we are dealing here with material that will form her second CD. Second CDs are notoriously difficult. First CDs contain the songs an artist has had their lifetime to perfect whereas the second can be let down by a selection of songs which can include some that weren’t selected for the first and others that have had to be written in time to get the new CD recorded. The result can often be disappointing. However, no worries here on either count!

Alana’s song selection included enough familiar material to be enjoyable from that perspective, but more importantly, the new songs seem even stronger than those on her first CD. This is good news. Alana has held off from rushing back to the studio and now she has built a stock of really good songs to ensure that the difficult second CD will be a delight and prove that we are not dealing here with the proverbial ‘one hit wonder’.

This was also borne-out in

her performance which has matured so much in so little time. Don’t get me wrong; I thought Alana was good last time. This time she showed that she is on her way to delivering on the potential that so many have written and spoken about.

Alana’s setlist was something like this:

Don’t you remember?
Lions and werewolves
Juanita
Prairie sun
Jesus gonna be there
Believers like you
As the crow flies
Moonshine

If I never say goodbye
Song for a cougar
Sing a sad song
Stop crying when you’re gone
Levi
Dangerous one
What brought you down
Who has the best tunes
Red headed girl
Helpless
Enough to go around
Those memories
Thine the glory
