How do house concerts work?

We provide a place to play (ie our lounge!) in an informal setting and then round up 30 or so invited (and paying) guests. We publish two times related to the show, the first is the time from which we open our doors to anyone who wants to arrive in time for food, the second is an approximate start-time for the show. We won’t start early but sometimes we do run a little late. The artist gets the money collected and the chance to sell their CDs commission-free.

Do you charge for food?

No. Essentially you take pot-luck in what you get to eat. It will be vegetarian, sometimes snacks, sometimes a full meal, it all depends on what we have time to prepare.

What are the rules?

Rules? Well, the show is in our home so we ask that you respect that and behave in a fashion that allows everyone to enjoy the show. We’re hosting these shows for the artists so they may make other requests! Oh and no smoking inside the house please. Have a good time.

Should we bring anything?

It’s not necessary but if you would like to bring food to share that is always welcome. Do let us know though, just so we can avoid a mountain of leftover food.

Can we take photos/video/audio recording.

Yes (we may ask you to refrain from using flash if the artist requests that), no and no!

How many people will be in the audience?

We can squeeze-in a maximum of 35 people.

Can we buy CDs from the artist?

You can buy from whatever selection they bring. Sometimes this is a selection of all their CDs or maybe just their latest. We don’t really know until the day.

Where are you based?

Turners Hill, which is a village in West Sussex, a few miles from Gatwick airport in between Crawley and East Grinstead. We’ll email you directions.

Do you make money from this?

Absolutely not. The money donated by the audience goes to the artist. In fact by the time we’ve hired chairs and provided food, each show costs us money.

So why do it?

You’ve obviously never been! It’s just the best way to see live music. A tiny audience, a few feet from the performer with no sound system in the way. We love putting on these shows, giving a stage so some hugely talented musicians and helping bring great music to our friends.

Are they private or can anyone attend?

Because numbers are so limited attendance is by invitation and donations need to be made in advance (just to avoid no-shows). If you might be interested in attending a show please email us at turnershillconcert@yahoo.co.uk

What does it cost?

It varies depending on what we’ve agreed with the artist. Please check the details for the particular show you’re interested in, or email us.

Can we bring children?

Will they enjoy sitting for up to a couple of hours listening to music? If so, then sure. However because we are so tight for space we will have to ask that you make a donation on their behalf, otherwise we effectively lose a seat.

Do you use a sound system?

No, the performances are acoustic and unplugged and all the better for it!
